Student Support

IUGB Student Services includes academic advising, activities, health, housing, meal service, security and transportation. As a student-centered university, IUGB strives to be responsive to the needs of all students and to make their experience on campus pleasant, safe and enlightening. Students take an active role in creating a responsible community that respects the rights of everyone. Students are encouraged to learn more about themselves and others by participating in the numerous programs and activities available, supporting and celebrating differences among individuals, providing service both locally and globally, and living within the guidelines established for IUGB. Students and staff are collaboratively engaged in pursuing an education that is based on a tradition of academic excellence. Student Affairs is dedicated to helping students develop an appreciation of the goals, values and objectives of the University. Its main purpose is to create co-curricular activities and recreational opportunities for the students. The office strives to develop entertaining events for the benefit of the IUGB community and encourage students to use their talents and creativity. The aim is to enhance the personal and professional growth of the students as a complement to their academic life.

Student Government Association (SGA): The Association works to improve the lives of students. It provides leadership opportunities, sponsors some clubs and excursions, and supports events sponsored by the University. The SGA officers are elected by the student body and serve voluntarily. Standing committees of students are formed to support SGA activities. Major student events are organized by the SGA, which also manages a small student store on campus, under the supervision of the Finance Department.

Student Clubs: Student clubs, programs, activities, and other leadership opportunities are an integral part of the co-curricular learning experience at IUGB. Some clubs that have run are: Business, Dance, Information Technology, Law, Music, Political Science, Religion, Health, Science, Speech, and Student Association of Nigerian Diaspora. Each is sponsored by a Staff or Faculty member.

Fundraising: Fundraising is defined as the sale of products or services, the solicitation of money or contributions, the collection of dues or donations, the charge of admissions, and any other means designed to raise funds. Funds raised on University properties are to be used to further the educational and recreational opportunities for registered campus organizations, and not for personal interests or needs. Unauthorized commercial activity is not permitted on campus or on the name of the University and any consequence of such activity is not the responsibility of the University.

Interscholastic Athletics: IUGB promotes and encourages interscholastic competition as a means of developing a student’s sense of team effort, fair play and good sportsmanship. Athletic opportunities are mostly of the intra-mural type. Soccer and basketball games are held regularly on or near campus. Pool and ocean swimming are available at nearby locations. Some equipment is available on campus for strength training.

University Volunteers: The University may accept volunteers who can contribute to the University in significant ways. The community members may, for example, help conduct special trips and excursions that will expose students to the many cultural resources and events the community offers. Acceptance of volunteer work in no way implies a promise of employment at the University.

University-Organized Trips: A field trip is defined as an activity financed by the University that has identifiable educational objectives, which will include specific activities and an evaluation of outcomes. Students may initiate recreational excursions, which are not financed by the University. Such trips are encouraged so long as they enhance the educational routine of students. Parental permission is required for participation in overnight trips for all students. Trip arrangements and schedules must be approved at least one week in advance. On all University-sponsored trips involving students, provision is made for proper supervision of students. A first aid kit must be taken on all field trips.

Student Housing

The Residential Life staff works with students to make the university living environment complementary to the academic experience. Students should have a well-rounded educational experience by integrating all facets of University life, including community living and learning, into their own lives. IUGB housing has single, double, and triple rooms available as well as a limited number of studios. Males and females are housed in separate buildings. Students are solicited as Residential Assistants. Private housing is available in Grand-Bassam. Students are advised to seek out private housing as early as possible. Dining Services The dining service offers 3 meals a day, seven days a week, for all residential students. Day students are allowed to purchase meals on campus. Menus are posted weekly. Special dietary requests should be addressed to the Director of Housing and Auxiliary Services.

The University has the right to perform on the spot tests for illegal drugs.

Pedagogical Support Material

Materials to support courses are covered by semester fees. Textbooks, CDs and other course materials can be claimed from the Textbook Manager.

Remedial Instruction

IUGB does not have a formal remedial program of instruction outside of UPP. This Program provides training in English language and in mathematics if needed. Volunteer assistance is provided through a Writing Lab and a Science Tutorial Program.

Computer and E-mail Support

Computer technology is an integral part of IUGB instruction and communication. Instructors communicate information about courses through an online learning management system. University information is communicated through the IUGB email address. Personal information about each student, academic and financial is available to each individual student through the University portal.

Computers are available for student use on campus in the Library and in computer labs. Students are, however, advised that they will probably be more functional if they come to campus with their own computer. Both Wi-Fi and cable internet access are available throughout the campus and in the student residences.

Students are given an IUGB email address, access to server storage, and access to the online services as soon as they have made the required initial payment for the semester. Computer support is available from the Information Technology staff, the Library staff, and courses in Computer Science.

Technical assistance in IT is provided for students, faculty and staff. This assistance comprises both assistance with specific tasks, and training on the use of IT equipment and software available at IUGB.

Students are expected to have the technical level specified by the Computer Skills Requirement listed for each course. The Computers and Applications (CSC 1010) course prepares students to meet all of the computer skills prerequisites for core courses. They may also seek assistance for specific tasks from the IT staff.

Security Services

IUGB strives to protect its whole community through security services and best practices. A private guard company controls the exterior security of the buildings and grounds. Cameras control the internal security of IUGB buildings. Residential students are given rules to follow that have been designed to protect them. All IUGB students are advised to take reasonable precautions to protect themselves and their belongings. This includes giving accurate and updated contact information for both students and parents to University authorities. It is not advisable to bring items of great value to the campus.

Services for Exceptional Students

Within the limitations of its resources and programs, the University shall make every effort to meet the differing educational needs of its students. Exceptional students should be advised to maximize their potential. However, every effort is made to make our campus wheelchair accessible and to meet certain special needs. Also, every effort is made to accommodate students and staff with special needs such as visual, auditory impairments, as well as limitations in other physical capacities. Faculty should be accommodating special needs students in their classroom, instructional materials, and course requirements.
