Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology (BS MET)

Program Overview

The West African region his now known to be have very good potential for oil and gas discoveries at commercial quantities. The production and commercialization of recent hydrocarbon findings in Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana will need practically oriented well trained scientist and engineers.

The goal of the MET major is to provide students with a well-rounded, fundamental and application-oriented education focused on the knowledge of existing and new developments in the area. Graduates of the Bachelor degree will develop the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary for appropriate careers in local and national industries. To achieve this mission, the MET program is committed to attaining the following goals for all students:

  • Provide a career-oriented program that prepares students for productive
  • Emphasize the latest technological advancements in computer-aided drafting, design, and manufacturing. Students should be able to apply problem-solving techniques and critical thinking skills at the level required for their professional
  • Gain experience in the application of computer software to analyze and design mechanical systems and automated manufacturing
  • Pursue graduate degrees and life-long The programs are designed to satisfy the educational needs of the West African region by providing a climate that fosters self-awareness, personal growth, and a desire for lifelong learning.

Learning outcomes

Once our students are out in the workforce they should be able to:

  • Engage in applications oriented design, manufacturing, and management of mechanical systems, including computer‐aided design and manufacturing, and all the technical and economic variables affecting
  • Work competently in technical and professional careers related to the field of Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Function effectively both as an individual and as a member of project
  • Use oral, written and computer‐based communication technology to make presentations, construct reports and exchange technical information about mechanical systems design and manufacturing
  • Continue growth in professional knowledge and the ability to function appropriately in a diverse and changing business environment
  • Apply the highest professional and ethical standards to their activities in the mechanical and manufacturing
  • Understand the local, national and global issues related to the development and application of mechanical systems and to be considerate of the impact of these issues in the West African cultural

Career prospects

The information on the career prospects regarding mechanical engineering graduates can be summarized as follows:

1- Aerospace (currently, unavailable in IUGB)
Aerospace engineering focuses on developing aircraft, spacecraft, missiles, satellites, and mechanical systems for national defense. It consists of two overlapping branches – aeronautic and astronautic engineering.

2- Automotive
Automotive/automobile engineering is a subdivision of vehicle engineering that designs and manufactures different automobiles. It involves intensive research and direct application of mathematical models.

3- Manufacturing
Manufacturing engineers research and develop methods to maximize efficiency when producing excellent and economically competitive products.

4- Mechatronics and Robotics
The robotics and mechatronics sector is the intersection where electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering meet. With this sector, the graduated student will have the opportunity to design control systems to develop devices and programs that boost efficiency and automation.

5- Oil & Gas
Oil and gas engineering is a branch of petroleum engineering. Engineers in this sector are responsible for designing and developing reliable machines, devices and tools such as platforms, rigs, pumps, compressors, distillation columns, reactors, heat exchangers, separators, valves, fittings, turbines, pipelines, etc. Besides that, they also search for crude oil and natural gas reservoirs.

6- Quality Assurance
In quality assurance, engineers review products or programs before its launch to detect and fix bugs and defects to ensure design quality and prevent defects.

7- Biomedical Engineering
Biomechanics is the study of human movement including the interaction between the participant and equipment. Primarily these studies are broken down into two broad areas: kinetics (the study of forces acting on the body) and kinematics (the study of movements of the body). Most of the human body systems need to be read by tools designed by mechanical engineers. The biomedical sector recognizes the need for mechanical engineers to improvise their systems and economize their tools.

8- Computer Science
A dynamic professional field, computer science/engineering offers varied career paths in both hardware engineering (e.g. microprocessors) and software development. Each can drive computing advances in industries ranging from aerospace to healthcare.
